Our "Spruced-up" Picnic Table

Who doesn’t love a good ole classic style wooden picnic table?

I had been looking up classic style picnic tables on wayfair and amazon for a solid 5 months but never agreed with the price tag. They ranged from $300 all the way up to $3,000. The prices were pure insanity and we both agreed we would have to find another way to get a picnic table.

Joey was prepared to make it from scratch but after reviewing all the pieces and cuts necessary, I knew this would take quite a while for him to finish and with his work schedule it might take even longer. With time constraints between work and routine home life, a major short cut was needed.

On one of our trips to home depot, I noticed this 72 inch unfinished picnic table placed in front of the store for $99! I was not fond of the plain look but after doing extensive research on picnic tables, the size and the price were something I could get behind! SOLD! We loaded this bad boy up in the back of Joey’s truck and off we went!

We decided to “spruce” up this picnic table to give it the aesthetic we desired with left over paint that we had from previous home projects. Joey started by giving the whole table a good sanding. He started off  using 40 grit sandpaper and followed up with using 120 grit sandpaper and then 180 grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish.

Look at how sanding gives this picnic table new life.

After that, I painted the base white and the table top a redwood stain. Project complete. Our most simple DIY, to date. We finished this project in half a day! Not only did we save time, we saved money! We learned a valuable lesson on this project: it is okay not to always go BIG on DIY projects.

So here is our “spruced” up picnic table! We added an umbrella for shade and a potted plant, candle lantern, and a mason jar with string lights to set the ambience at night. We have spent many nights out here eating our garden to table meals!
